Prologue For All and None

Berlin Premiere of a short film shot on location in Norway, July 2010

“Prologue for All and None”, a 29 minute-long silent movie shot and edited in ten days by Benjamin Echazarreta+ ID during our recent participation at Sørfinnset Skole/The Nord Land, in the remote area of Gildeskål, way up in the north of Norway. With text and actions directly based on the prologue section of Friedrich Nietzsche’s 1885 “Also Spracht Zarathustra”, the movie follows Zarathustra’s character as he moves through the lansdscape in the strange atmosphere of twenty-four-hour sunlight.

Summer at Sørfinnset Skole/ The Nord Land

A Project started by Geir Tore Holm and Søssa Jørgensen, Norway, July 2010

Sørfinnset is a village of 70 inhabitants located in the municipality of Gildeskål, in Norway. The closed down village school house is anually reopened to serve as the hub for a number of cultural activities uniting local and international know-how. Sørfinnset skole/the nord land has been inspired by the land foundation in Northern Thailand, with which, for several years, the project initiated by Geir Tore Holm and Søssa Jørgensen has embarked on an unofficial collaborative exchange of art and culture. Now they intend to make a more formal and educative project involving young people from both nations and beyond, merging resources, traditions and experiences that will serve as hands-on efforts. In collaboration with Sørfinnset Residents’s Association, two Norwegian and two Thai artists runs the house as a meeting place and idea workshop. Sørfinnset skole/ the nord land revolves around seasonal activities, gardening, harvesting, nature hikes, construction work and crafts combined with discussions, exchange of knowledge, tranquility and entertainment.

Total Paz es Total Guerra (Arcoiris Atonal Op.1)

In the apartment of Pancho Casas and Yura Labarca, Santiago de Chile, April 2010

A show installed in the apartment of Pancho Casas and Yura Labarca in downtown Santiago. The main character from Total Paz es Total Guerra was Pierre Lunaire, as performed by Ian Szydlowski. The character was loosely based on the 1912 piece Pierrot Lunaire (Op. 21) by Arnold Schoenberg. Pierre manipulated a group of objects and performed four selected segments (Atonal Rainbows) from Shoenberg's piece on a painted xilophone, having previously transcribed the colors of the spectrum to it using the diatonic chromatic scale, where Red was Do or C. The show also included a series of silkscreens on aluminum and sculptural elements.

Instruction to print the booklet (printing version):
This publication has 120 interior pages that can be printed to fit on A4 or A3. In printing preferences choose printing odd numbers first, then reverse the order of the resulting stack of prints, flip and insert again in the printer to print down the even numbers, this will yield a nice collection of 58 images opposed to 58 pages of witty poems. Print the cover and fold. The original issue is unbound so the pages can be interchanged and progressively fucked up according to the user's whim. Good luck!

Protocolo Ouro Preto
VII Bienal do Mercosul, Porto Alegre, Brazil, October-November, 2009

ID presents a piece within the show The Magnetic Tree by curator Mario Navarro in the 7th Biennale of Mercosul Scream and Listen in Porto Alegre, Brazil. All pieces in the show had to change their appeareance a number of ten times during the 45 day exhibition. Protocolo Ouro Preto (title refers to a document that states the administrative rules of the commercial treaty of Mercosul) consists of a 15 minute film shot in Porto Alegre with a group of amateur actors from the Bambas de Orgia Samba School, which is then released in 7 stages, as a local artist (Fabianno Gummo from the Porto Alegre performance team Tentacle Ensemble Collective) performs weekly activations of consecutive spaces, each one containing one scene. The work reflects on political propaganda and the political responsability of the artist, using opposed ideas and counteractive elements and including references to Leni Riefenstahl, Gustav Metzger, Cildo Meireles and other luminaries, as well as two Brazilian half-failed political projects from the 1930's.

Halloween War Map

Orchard Gallery, New York, October 31st, 2007

Invited by Karin Schnieder to participate within her show Image Coming Soon... ID engaged in a 3 hour performance on the night of October 31st. Inspired by our research on Ergotism incidents (Heaven's Fire, St. Anthony's Fire...) happened throughout Europe during the late dark ages and how a misreading of their diseased effects might have lead to catastrophic witch hunting -including the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The twenty-four-hours-long performance included an intention of helicopters flying across mystical fog, a bucket of live frogs, a collection of star maps, an enlarged intervened photostatic print of news events happened one week prior to the event, a C-print portrait of a related muse, altered music samples by Marlene Dietrich (who was never portrayed without a lit cigarrette), a copy of a pact allegedly signed by Father Urbain Granadier and countersigned by Lucifer, Beelzebub, Satan, Elimi, Leviathan, Asteroth and Baalbarith (Loudun, 1634), a loaf of organic rye bread rotten during 6 days to the point of sporing Ergot, the smoke of one "La Gloria de Cuba" cigar, a two-piece suit made of untreated cow hide, a necklace of gold plated human teeth, distorting keyboard programming over ridden voices channeling the astringent poetry of Miroslav Holub (Bohemia, 1923), a guitar going through a death metal pedal, a portable turntable with only one record, spontaneous light intervention, insomniac picking on a found cytar, looped projections and a bottle of triple Belgian beer, all contained within a wide open chance of complicit intoxication.

Daniel Lopez Show

Whitebox/Roebling Hall, New York, June 2007

A groupshow of artists born in Chile, some still living there and some living in New York. Curated by Mario Navarro & Rodrigo Vergara.

The show happens simultaneously in two gallery spaces of 26th street in Chelsea, one non-profit, Whitebox, and one commercial, Roebling Hall. We presented a remix of the Europe Tour output:

DANIEL LOPEZ STATEMENT

Instituto Divorciado is an independent art enterprise started by Iván Navarro, Ian Szydlowski and Diego Fernandez in Brooklyn 2005. Our purpose is to create and circulate artworks where the issue of authorship is discussed through collaboration, in projects that have a continuous development. Instituto Divorciado aims to be a total art enterprise, embracing all aspects of the planning, production, design and collection of art works, their venues and publications.

Until our participation in Daniel Lopez Show, curated by Mario Navarro in two galleries of the Chelsea District of New York we had produced one group show in Germany and participated in two group shows, in Belgium and Holland.
For Daniel Lopez Show, as a way to extend their meanings and range, we have mixed the outputs of two recent appearances: taking the movie “Acronym Fever: Portrait of an Artist” from what we did at De Appel, in Amsterdam, and the minitheater box “Scheissebôite” from what we did at De Warande in Turnhout, Belgium. We've changed the proportions and surface of the box, its animated content, the pattern of the found photocopied material outside, adding also some paint to it to make it resemble a flag-wrapped coffin.

The Go-Between

De Bijlmer-Amsterdam, Holland, April, 2007

Curated by the 6 curators of the 2007 Curatorial Training Program of De Appel, Amsterdam.
A series of experimental art projects developing during a span of 10 days at De Bjilmer, a neighbourhood in the outskirts of Amsterdam. Instituto Divorciado will present "Acronym Fever: San Lorenzo's Holocoaster", a project that includes a video presentation (Sunday April 22nd) and an open communal feast (two lambs roasted on a bicycle powered spiedo) to take place between noon and midnight of Saturday April 21st. Also, as part of the final event of The Go Between, Instituto Divorciado will perform live music on Sunday 22nd.

The combined involvement of ID in two shows that happened in Holland and Belgium during April of 2007. Invited to Turnhout by De Warande Cultural Center through Curator Paz Guevara and to The Go Between by the 2007 Curatorial Training Program of De Appel Arts Center of Amsterdam, our participation turned out two pieces, Acronym Fever and Scheissebôite, each one equally consisting of a short movie, an activation performance and a sculpture-installation. We considered it almost one big developing event, hence, the combined photo gallery. Photo credits to Anu Vahtra, Giancarlo Pazzaneze, Benjamín Echazarreta and Maaike Gouwenberg.

Homemade

Curated by Paz Aburto Guevara, at De Warande Cultural Center, Turnhout, Belgium, simultaneously with the Open Doek Film Festival, April, 2007

Our original proposal consisted of a full-room installation, a mock office for ID, where we would receive visits from invited artists and naturally interact with the public, offering improvised talks and tours and, eventually, some sort of “divorce assistance”. We are set to produce a piece that intermixes our own artistic output (objects, paintings, graphics and other commodities) with our social and performative skills and the presentation of other artists, local or not, in full interaction with the surroundings of the film festival. The final result, "Scheisse Boite" consists of a video featuring complicated marionette maneuvering. The video is shown inside a box that resembles a mini movie theater and it's covered with photocopies of ID's collection of visual debris. During opening night we will also launch the CD compilation TRIBUTO A PENTAGRAM, produced by Claudio Fernandez Sini and Jorge Cabieses for Hueso Records in collaboration with ID.
